Of particular excitement this year has been the discovery that the two story hewn log tavern building, built in 1806 by Somerset’s co-founder, Jacob Miller, still exists after hiding anonymously under clap board siding for over a century. The society was able to purchase the Jacob Miller Tavern this past summer and have begun research and restoration.
The Society owns and operates the Perry County Historical Museum. It is housed in a beautifully restored 1830’s era brick building that lies within the Somerset National Register Historic District. This building was purchased by the society in 1980. The majority of items in the museum collection have been donated by individuals in the local community. Of particular interest is our display of Civil War memorabilia commemorating our local nativ3e son, General Philip Sheridan.
